BTEC National Award in Performing Arts (Acting)
The BTEC National Award in Performing Arts (Acting) will give you an understanding of the performing arts with a specific focus on the essential skills, techniques and disciplines of the acting profession. The qualification provides you with an insight into the employment opportunities available helping you to choose a career path or move on to further study in the performing arts.
What will I Learn?
You will study 2 core units and 3 specialist units over the 2 year course
PERFORMING TO AN AUDIENCE (core unit) This unit will give you the opportunity to undertake, prepare and perform a role as part of a performing arts company presenting work to an audience.
PRICIPLES OF ACTING (core unit) This unit has the necessary practical focus that professional actors use and will provide many opportunities to consider a range of techniques that can help the actor to characterise a performance both physically and vocally. You will also discover how to interpret and realise text and how to communicate this text effectively to an audience.
Specialist units that you can choose from include: Devising plays, Theatre in Education, Classical Theatre Performance, Contemporary Theatre Performance, Musical Theatre Performance, Performing with Masks, Developing Voice for the Actor, Acting Auditions, Drama Improvisation, Applying Acting Styles, Mime, Radio Acting.
How will I be Assessed? Work is assessed through portfolio and performance work which provides evidence that you have covered the relevant areas and have developed the necessary skills and understanding.This means that it is important to keep your work up to date.Work is internally assessed by your teacher(s) and a sample of work is selected for external verification by a visiting BTEC verifier
What are the Entry Requirements? Most students who take Acting in the sixth form have done the BTEC first diploma in Acting at key stage 4. However some students choose the course with no prior qualifications because they have an interest in drama as a hobby or they think it will compliment their other course choices. Please speak to one of the Drama teachers if you are interested.
Future Opportunities? Further education courses at colleges or universities to study one of the many Performing Arts related courses. Entry to a specialist Drama School to study the profession of Actor or Director. Entry to employment in one of the many Performing Arts sectors.
